Costco Canada is recalling Ajinomoto-brand Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-style Fried Rice from warehouse club stores in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. The reason, according the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), is that there is a risk that the chicken was undercooked.

ajinomoto yakitori ChickenThe recalled frozen ready meals, made in the USA and distributed in 1.53 kg packages, have best before dates ranging from September 26 to. November 5, 2017. The product code is 0-71757-05642-8.

The CFIA said people should dispose of the product or return it to the store where it was purchased to receive a refund. Thus far there have been no reported illnesses associated with consumption of the ready meal.

This is the second time this year that the product has been the subject of a recall. In May the manufacturer, Ajinomoto Windsor Inc., issued a voluntary recall in Canada and the USA due to the possibility of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. In addition to Ajinomoto Yakitori Chicken Fried Rice, that recall also included the Petite Cuisine Southwest Chicken Firecrackers SKU.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
