Brattleboro, North Carolina, USA-based Poppies International, Inc., a subsidiary of Zonnebeke, Belgium-headquartered Poppies International NV, has issued a voluntary recall of Delizza brand frozen Belgian Custard Cream Mini Eclairs, as some of them may potentially be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The action applies only to 420-gram, 30-count tubs produced between March 5-9, 2018, bearing the following lot number and information printed on the side of containers: L1M1018 Best Before 09/09/19.

Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and/or diarrhea from Listeria infection, the bacteria could cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. It is also capable of causing serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The recall was a result of a routine sampling program by the company, which revealed that finished product run on the same line contained the bacteria. Poppies did not distribute any items that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, and as a precautionary measure is recalling all products run on the line during the entire production week in question. No illnesses or adverse health effects resulting from these events have been reported to date.

Persons who have purchased or received any mini eclairs with the L1M1018 lot number should not consume them, but return the packages to the place of purchase to obtain full refunds. Consumers with questions may contact the company by telephoning 1-252-442-4016.
