Uddingston, Scotland-headquartered Dawnfresh Seafoods has sold its frozen scampi operation to North Yorkshire, England-based Whitby Seafoods Ltd. for an undisclosed price, according to a January 15 story in the Herald Scotland. The transaction will not affect the company’s 550 full-time staff, noted the report.
Dawnfresh owner Alastair Salvesen commented: “I would like to thank all of our longstanding customers and suppliers for their support over many years, and I wish the Whittle family and their team at Whitby continuing success in the future.”
Ranked as a major UK seafood producer with three factories currently in operation, Dawnfresh was largely focused on scampi production during the 1980s. Today it packs a wide line of frozen finished products that range from breaded fish and fish cakes to sea trout, salmon and whole gutted fish and fillets. The company also sources and sells a variety of species including yellowfin sole, basa and cod.
Whitby Seafoods, founded by Graham Whittle in 1985, is the largest manufacturer of scampi in Britain. It has grown in part by acquisition during the past decade, buying Middleton Seafood and Rockwall in Northern Ireland and Galloway Seafoods in Scotland. Serving as managing director today is Graham’s son, Daniel. His sister Laura is sales and marketing director, while brother Edward works as operations director.
