The Captain D’s fast casual restaurant chain in the United Sates closed out the third quarter of 2016 with its 20th consecutive period of positive growth, generating a 2.8% system-wide same store sales increase.

Additionally, the Nashville, Tennessee-headquartered company has been recognized for its strong franchise sales development performance and was honored with the “Best Overall Franchise Development Award” at the recent Franchise Update Media Group’s Leadership and Development Conference.

CaptainDs NewStore 300“Despite the restaurant industry experiencing spending challenges, Captain D’s continues to generate solid growth. In fact, we’re on track for our fourth consecutive year of achieving record high system-wide AUV (average unit volume),” announced CEO Phil Greifeld on October 3.

During the third quarter, limited-time-only items were introduced such as D’s Jumbo Coconut Shrimp, which was positioned as “a great taste of summertime flavors and a great fit with the brand’s new coastal, beach interior.” Also in the spotlight was a “5 Full Meals for Under $5” promotion, which resonated with guests during the critical back-to-school period.

Coupled with ongoing menu innovation, Captain D’s management credits its new restaurant design with contributing to the brand’s compounding success. To date, 50% of all units have been re-imaged after jettisoning the former “captain of the sea” look in favor of bright colors to create an atmosphere that evokes a sunny beachside resort destination. Another 50 outlets are scheduled to be remodeled by the end of this year.

Operating 513 restaurants in 21 states plus US military bases around the world, Captain D’s is ranked as the number one seafood franchise in America in terms of average unit volume. Founded in 1969, the chain’s menu includes hand-battered fish dishes and premium-quality grilled fish, shrimp, Alaska salmon cakes, chicken, surf and turf, hush puppies, desserts and beverages.

CaptainDs productCEO Greifeld cites “high-quality seafood, warm hospitality, and commitment to innovation” as reasons for continued success. In 2014, average revenue at franchise-owned locations was up 4.4% compared with the year before, topping $1 million. More recently, as pointed out in the company’s 2016 franchise disclosure document, the average gross sales for new stores opened during the past two years topped $1.4 million.
