Americold has broken ground in Clearfield, Utah, to expand its facility at 755 E 1700 South Street. Upon completion there will be 6.5 million additional cubic feet of temperature-controlled warehouse space at the cold storage company’s existing 11.2 million cubic foot regional distribution center at the site. Together with its Salt Lake City operation, this expansion will significantly extend Americold’s market leadership within the Greater Salt Lake City metro area to more than 50% of total available capacity.

“The new building should be operational in time for our peak volumes during the fourth quarter of 2017,” said Fred Boehler, president and chief executive officer of Atlanta, Georgia-headquartered Americold.

The warehouse will feature ammonia-free, self-contained, refrigeration units with no engine room requirement. Its air-cooled system advantages include significant energy efficiency gains and zero water usage. The facility will include a 34F dock and adjustable temperature zones to -20F.

Utah’s population has grown by roughly 6.1% between 2010 and 2014, in comparison with overall US population expansion of approximately 3.1%, making it the fourth fastest growing state in the nation. This has been recognized by Americold’s customers, who are enacting their own expansion plans within the region.

“Clearfield recognizes the value that Americold brings to the city,” said Mayor Mark Shepherd. “This expansion signifies a continuation of a great partnership with the company, as well as the beginning of new growth and vitality within the city. It is great to see business not only come to Clearfield, but to thrive in Clearfield.”
