Kloosterboer Earns ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM Rating in Velsen

IJmuiden, Netherlands-headquartered Kloosterboer has been awarded the highest-level BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification for the expansion and adaptation of its cold storage complex in Velsen. The “Outstanding” rating follows the company’s previous achievement of 3-Star “Very Good” certification for expansion at its Maasvlakte facility in Rotterdam, and the installation of four wind turbines at its warehouse operation in Vlissingen.

The 15,000-square-meter expansion in Velsen is about 10% more energy efficient than comparable facilities. It use of innovative technologies, including 2,500 solar panels installed atop aluminum roofing, obtain the highest possible efficiency while making the expanded area energy-neutral in the bargain.

The control system for freezer chambers was written in-house and incorporates an important focus on optimization and energy saving. Existing halls are included in the new control system to ensure an optimal mix of the energy efficiencies including use of the solar panels and timely input of energy from the grid to keep costs low. The entire building is also equipped with LED lighting, complete with motion detectors.

A skybox is perched at a corner of the facility to provide occupants with a bird’s eye view of the North Sea Canal. The high-tech interior features modern meeting, conference and training space.
