KFC Romania’s quick service restaurants are now menuing Dipping Fries, which appear to be what some food pundits regard as crispy fried potato skins designed to accommodate extra sauce. A serving sells for 6.5 lei (approximately US $2), while an American Bucket of chicken (containing 11 crispy strips and 11 hot wings) goes for 44 lei (about $13.40) at KFC outlets in Bucharest.

Dominique Zamora, commenting in Foodbest, observed: “Okay, so technically they’re calling them ‘Dipping Fries,’ but we all know what these things really are. Potato skins. Or, if you want to be even more precise, dipping sauce delivery vehicles… The gist is that they’re basically regular fries with the “insides” hollowed out, in order to make room for more dipping sauce. Filling options include garlic sauce, ketchup, curry, sweet & sour, barbecue, and uh, salsa.”

“KFC’s New French Fry is a Ketchup Lover’s Dream Come True,” declared a headline in a recent Huffington Post story. The piece, written by Kate Bratskeir, posited: “If you consider the french fry a mere vessel for ketchup consumption, KFC Romania’s cutting-edge created will have you jumping for joy – and reaching for the Heinz bottle. The hollowed-out center of the new fries creates a paramount cradle for transporting ketchup from hand to mouth.”

While the product may be new to KFC customers in Romania, versions of it have been available for some time to foodservice buyers from frozen potato product specialists. Lamb Weston Potato Waves, for example, were rolled out in 2008.
