No Surprise American Cheese on Burgers Ranks No. 1 in US

Just in time to coincide with National Cheeseburger Day in the United States on September 18, Finlandia Cheese released findings from a survey about cheeseburger consumption preferences conducted recently among 2,000 Americans from coast the coast. The results, according to the Parsippany, New Jersey-based company’s public relations department, “are ‘grater’ than you ever imagined.”

The poll, conducted in conjunction with Learndipity Data Insights, revealed that two-thirds of US consumers enjoy American cheese on their cheeseburgers. Here are the complete rankings, based on the percentage of respondents who “like” or “love” each cheese variety on a burger:

  1. American Cheese: 66%
  2. Cheddar: 65%
  3. Swiss: 43%
  4. Pepper Jack: 40%
  5. Provolone: 31%
  6. Colby: 27%
  7. Muenster: 16%
  8. Gouda: 16%
  9. Havarti: 11%
  10. Gruyere: 9%

Among the survey’s other findings:

  • The Western United States ranked #1 for preferring burgers with cheddar (67%), with the South coming in at a close second (63%).
  • New York has 39% pepper jack cheese lovers, while New Jersey has 21%.
  • 11% of women prefer gouda cheese, versus 23% of men.
