Tetra Pak is extending the Lausanne, Switzerland-headquartered company’s paper-based packaging expertise into the ice cream sector with its newly created Ice Cream Wrap, advancing the commercialization of a wrapping solution developed specifically for ice cream producers. A phased rollout in Europe is set for Q4 2026, before expanding into additional markets.

As consumer expectations continue to evolve, ice cream brands are looking for new ways to stand out and connect with changing preferences. Research shows that nearly a quarter (24%) of consumers globally consider sustainability an important aspect of ice cream packaging, while 16% prefer paper packaging for the category.

Made from up to 85% paper sourced from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources, Tetra Pak’s latest achievement will help brands stand out on shelf while delivering the performance needed throughout the cold chain.

Drawing on more than 70 years of expertise in paper-based food packaging and a deep understanding of ice cream production, the wrap has been designed to fit the practical realities of ice cream manufacturing. Its thin profile and advanced multi-layer structure help protect products while using materials efficiently and supporting reliable operations.

“Ice cream is one of the world’s most loved food categories, and innovation now extends beyond flavors and formats. Packaging is becoming an increasingly important way for brands to differentiate, attract attention and respond to changing consumer expectations,” said Peter Lindstrom, Tetra Pak’s food solutions vice president. “Ice Cream Wrap gives producers a new way to create a distinctive consumer experience, combining the familiar appearance of paper with the functionality required for ice cream products.”

The packaging is currently undergoing validation with ice cream producers across Europe, including Swedish company Triumf Glass. These trials are helping Tetra Pak assess performance in live production environments and gather consumer insights ahead of wider commercialization.”

Moa Frisk Lönnblom, marketing director at Triumf Glass, commented: “Innovation is an important part of our business, and we’re excited to, together with Tetra Pak, explore how the Ice Cream Wrap can create new opportunities in the category. It has the potential to offer consumers something genuinely different and help shape the future of ice cream packaging.”

Helsinki, Finland-headquartered Stora Enso has unveiled two significant developments to its Trayforma tray board range: a basis weight reduction across the existing line, and the launch of Trayforma Brown, an entirely new unbleached product. Together, they extend what Trayforma offers by delivering greater material efficiency and adding a new option for brands seeking a natural look on shelf.

Both products are built on a three-ply structure incorporating CTMP in the middle layer, which enables reduced basis weight while maintaining board thickness. Trayforma Brown is well-suited for ready meals, bakery, frozen and chilled food products.

The new lighter offering delivers the same strength, forming performance, and converting reliability as the current base board, but uses less raw material. Less material per tray means better yield throughout the value chain, and a lower board weight naturally contributes to reduced carbon footprint in production and transport.

Trayforma Brown responds to demand for a premium natural appearance in tray packaging. Its technical performance meets the same demands as the rest of the Trayforma family, and it is the first brown tray board to support oven heating, withstanding temperatures up to 220°C with a transparent PET coating. It is also available with a high-barrier BarrPeel solution for vacuum-skin packaging.

“For our customers, the natural look of brown board is increasingly relevant, but not at the cost of performance. With Trayforma Brown, they don’t have to make that trade-off. And with our advancements in lightweighting Trayforma, everyone in the value chain benefits from better yield,” said Jaana Tani, technical account manager.

Trayforma Brown and the lightweighted Trayforma range will be presented May 7-13 at Interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

White Castle is broadening the availability of its Cheddar Bacon Cheese Slider to more supermarket and grocery freezer aisles across the USA via new standalone retail packaging in multiple pack sizes.

The quick service restaurant operator first introduced the Cheddar Bacon Cheese Slider last year as part of a retail variety pack available only in Walmart stores. The product proved so popular that White Castle introduced it in January as a stand-alone item at CVS stores across America. Albertsons, Safeway and other grocery outlets began selling the Slider this month, and in April it will be available in Dollar General stores nationwide.

The Cheddar Bacon Cheese Slider features 100% beef and savory steam-grilled onions topped with a slice of cheddar-flavored cheese made with real bacon pieces, all served on the chain’s signature fluffy bun.

“We are constantly keeping a pulse on the flavors consumers find most indulgent and satisfying, and bacon continues to top that list,” said Sarah Paulson, the Columbus, Ohio-headquartered company’s director of retail marketing. “With the Cheddar Bacon Cheese Slider, we’re delivering the smoky, savory flavor shoppers love, making it available in more stores and offering multiple pack sizes that make it even easier to enjoy White Castle at home.”

The Cheddar Bacon Cheese Sliders are offered in a variety of package sizes, giving consumers the flexibility to choose the quantity that’s right for them. They continue to be featured in the Cheese Slider Variety Pack, which also contains Jalapeño Cheese Sliders and Classic Cheese Sliders.

Birds Eye is relaunching its frozen fish finger products line in the United Kingdom, following extensive consumer testing that showed a clear preference for crunchier breadcrumb coating enveloping its flaky 100% white fish fillets. Rolling out across the brand’s Breaded Omega 3 Alaska Pollock, Cod and Haddock ranges, the new recipe comes with a bold new pack design created to stand out and capture attention in the freezer aisles of supermarkets and grocery stores.

With Nielsen data for the 52-week period ending January 26 of this year showing market leader Birds Eye holding a 57.5% share of the £192.3 million UK fish finger category, the recipe and pack design upgrade aims to bring even more shoppers into a category already popular among consumers. In supporting the product release a multi‐million pound sterling marketing campaign is being initiated across TV, out-of-home, in-store and social media platforms to promote the taste, versatility and quality that have made Birds Eye Fish Fingers a household staple for over 70 years.

At the heart of the upgrade are the simple ingredients used to make the product, starting with frozen fish fillet blocks which are cut into fish finger rectangles. Each piece is then dipped in a flour-based batter before being coated in Birds Eye’s unique baked breadcrumbs. The fingers are flash-fried to set the coating and then frozen immediately to lock in quality. This is a process similar to how they might be made at home, just at larger scale.

“Birds Eye Fish Fingers have been part of British family life for generations because they consistently deliver on taste, quality, and convenience,” said Claire Sutton, marketing director. “This recipe refresh takes everything people love about our fish fingers and makes them even better. We’ve focused on creating the ultimate crunch while keeping the same succulent fish inside, giving shoppers the best fish finger experience possible.”

The new recipe in updated packaging hit shelves at Morrison’s on March 3 and will be available at Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Iceland and Asda stores starting March 9. Distribution is in 10-packs for Omega 3 Alaska Pollock Fish Fingers offered at a suggested price of £3.00. The Cod and Haddock products come in 8-packs going for £4.25.

Carvel Ice Cream Cakes has unveiled a new look at grocery stores in the United States. The updated packaging comes from I Love Ice Cream Cakes (ILICC), the Buffalo, New York-based Rich Products division behind a number of popular ice cream cakes in freezer aisle, including Carvel — The Original Ice Cream Cake, as well as ice cream cakes from Oreo, Reese’s, Funfetti and Jon Donaire.

The fresh look pairs Carvel’s classic heritage with a brighter, bolder, more modern personality. Pops of summery yellow join the brand’s signature cherry red and blue frost, plus playful design elements and an iconography nod to Carvel’s rich history and nearly a century of ice cream cake innovation.

“We wanted to create an eye-catching design that feels just as joyful as the memories that our cakes make,” said Kim Mrowczynski, Rich Products’ brand marketing manager for ice cream cakes. “What we’ve come up with conveys the spirit of Carvel Founder Tom Carvel — Mr. Carvel himself — who always had fun in mind when it came to work. We’re proud to bring that playful energy to a new generation of ice cream cake lovers.”
Carvel also recently updated its logo to reflect the brand’s classic roots, with the “V” in Carvel shaped like a cone holding soft-serve ice cream, the iconic treat that Mr. Carvel invented. A new tagline on grocery store packaging proudly reflects the brand’s place in dessert history as “The Original Ice Cream Cake.”

Scott & Jon’s, the fast-growing frozen seafood brand known for restaurant-quality meals, is unveiling a new brand identity that delivers a more elevated look and feel while staying true to its roots in the state of Maine.

The updated branding is an evolution, not a full overhaul, and reflects what consumers want most today: higher protein, tasty flavors, and meals made with premium ingredients. The refreshed packaging, upgraded recipes, and new brand messaging were shaped by extensive consumer testing.

“The message from consumers was clear: taste comes first, but trust is what gets them to try seafood from the freezer,” said Scott Demers, co-founder and co-chief executive officer of the Auburn, Maine, USA-based company.

Here’s what’s new:

• More Premium Look – An elevated yet approachable design across packaging and digital platforms that highlights taste and real ingredients.

• New Logo & Tagline – “Seafood Expertise, Born in Maine” strengthens the brand’s focus on seafood and celebrates the founders’ Maine upbringing.

• Enhanced Recipes – Revamped and more restaurant-inspired recipes across top meals, informed by consumer taste tests to deliver more flavor in every bite.
Appetite-Forward Food Photography – New photography that highlights the ingredients and showcases the seafood in a mouthwatering way.

Fresh Taste Promise – A new on-pack commitment that reassures consumers about microwaving seafood; a majority of  consumers stated this promise reduces concerns and builds trust.

More Useful Website – A redesigned, more sophisticated site with increased appetite appeal and improved navigation with the ability to search meals by type (pasta, rice bowls, gluten free and more).

Elevated Founder Story – Deeper storytelling across the website and back of pack to strengthen authenticity and the founders’ Maine connection.

Among items in Scott & Jon’s expanding frozen seafood meals range are Honey Sesame Salmon, Lemon Butter Dill Salmon, Baja Fish Taco Bowl, Fish Tikka Masala with Basmati Rice, Shrimp Alfredo, Shrimp Scampi and Cajun Style Shrimp Alfredo.
