Nashville, Tennessee, USA-based Blendtopia Products is voluntarily recalling 29,078 cases of seven-ounce frozen Blendtopia brand Superfood Smoothie Kits because of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The pathogenic bacteria may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The largely fruit and seed-based blends affected include Blendtopia brand Glow, Detox, Energy, Immunity and Strength Superfood Smoothie Kits, and are labeled as “Best By July 2021, Best By Oct 2021, and Best By Nov 2021.” The products were distributed nationwide to select retailer outlets and have been sold online.

The company, a unit of Manitowoc, Wisconsin-headquartered Lakeside Foods’ Peak Foods joint venture, discovered the issue through its ongoing quality control processes. The issue is believed to be isolated to a supplied ingredient.

The products are being voluntarily recalled as a precaution in full cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration. There have been no reports of sickness or illness to date associated with consumption of the items.

“Food safety is our highest priority, and we’re committed to assuring consumers can have full confidence in our products,” said Tiffany Taylor, founder of Blendtopia.

Consumers who may have the affected products on hand should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For more information, call the producer by dialing 1-844-260-8181, or e-mailing support@blendtopia.com.
