Hot Diggity Dog! The “Home of the Whopper” is now the “Dog House” too, as the world’s second largest fast food hamburger chain is barking up a new tree in its hunt to beef up business.
Burger King says it has become the largest restaurant operator in the United States to serve flame-grilled frankfurters following the rollout of Grilled Dogs that began on February 23 along with distribution of bargain coupons good for two classic hot dogs and two orders of small french fries in exchange for $5.
Grilled Dogs will be available as a permanent menu offering in Burger King outlets every day of the week throughout the year, as the chain is keen on dispelling the notion that hot dogs should be relegated to summer barbecues and baseball games.
It’s estimated that Americans eat over 20 billion hot dogs a year, and the debut of Grilled Dogs positions Burger King operators to take a large bite out of that market with one of its biggest new product rollouts in recent history.
“The introduction of Grilled Dogs just made sense to our guests and for our brand,” said Alex Macedo, the president of Burger King in North America. “We’re applying over 60 years of flame-grilling expertise with the Whopper sandwich to make Grilled Dogs the next great American icon.”
Two versions are currently available. The Classic Grilled Dog features 100% beef topped with ketchup, mustard, chopped onions and relish, served on a fluffy baked bun. The Chili Cheese Grilled Dog is the same beef hot dog in a bun topped with warm chili, shredded cheddar cheese.
The Classic Grilled Dog comes at a recommended price of $1.99, or $4.49 as a combo meal served with a fountain drink and small order of french fries. The Chili Cheese Dog is sold at the recommended price of $2.39, or as a combo meal deal with fries and a drink for $4.89 .
