Third USCS Facility in Pennsylvania Nears Completion
Primus Builders is wrapping up design-build services for United States Cold Storage’s (USCS) newest refrigerated warehouse, located north of Philadelphia in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The 6.5 million-cubic-foot facility features convertible freezer space that provides temperature zones ranging from 0° to 36°F.
“Aside from adding additional space for us to sell in the market, this third Pennsylvania site adds density to an already robust consolidated shipping program,” said Steve Cunningham, vice president and area manager. “This location will allow us to continue to grow our multi-vendor consolidation program and, in turn, drive down shipping costs for current customers. It also helps us attract new business.”
Like its sister Keystone State distribution centers in the Hazleton and Bethlehem, the Quakertown facility has a state-of-the-art, energy efficient CO2/NH3 cascade refrigeration system. It also features LED lighting with an integrated control system.
The coldstore’s 28 dock positions have been designed to allow trucks to open their doors into the building. Furthermore, the site has been set up for rail access.
Situated on a 40-acre parcel of land, there is plenty of room to expand in the future. Build-out capacity is 15 million cubic feet.
Woodstock, Georgia-based Primus used Building Information Modeling (BIM) from start to finish of the job to improve coordination and maintain the project schedule. Implementing BIM allowed the team to identify potential clashes during design and offer solutions before construction began. BIM also served as an efficient document management tool that reduced the number of printed drawings and improved the review process.
