McCain Foods has acquired Scelta Products, adding to its portfolio the Netherlands-based company’s extensive range of frozen appetizers and snacks including coated pre-cooked mushrooms, onion rings, cauliflower, broccoli and other vegetables. The deal, which closed on September 8 for an undisclosed price, represents a significant investment that will fuel McCain’s growth and expansion in the frozen prepared vegetable appetizer sector.

Despite the turmoil and uncertainty in the post-Covid pandemic world, McCain continues to look for opportunities to grow and invest with acquisitions that align with its business plan and global position. The Scelta Products purchase marks the latest in a series of moves made by the Florenceville, New Brunswick, Canada-headquartered value-added potato products specialist in recent years to enhance its appetizer and snack food offerings; some of these include Ad van Geloven, Strong Roots and Forno De Minas.

“With common customers and shared values as family-owned companies, there is a natural complement between McCain and Scelta,” said Max Koeune, chief executive officer of McCain Foods. “We feel honored and privileged to build on the legacy of Scelta Products, bringing their delicious products to our customers as we expand on the fantastic business that its founders have created.”

Scelta Products has been driving innovation in the frozen vegetable appetizer industry for more than two decades and has been a business partner of McCain’s for the past 13 years. Its assortment of onion rings, battered and breaded mushrooms and other offerings fit well within McCain’s existing range of appetizers.

Scelta Products’ plant assets will be integrated into McCain’s network, creating increased production capacity to accelerate prepared appetizer sales throughout European and international markets.

Venlo, Netherlands-headquartered Scelta Mushrooms, co-founder of Scelta Products and the international route to market for more than 20 years, will solely focus on its mushroom business going forward.

“McCain values the skills, experience and motivation of the management and employees of Scelta Products and looks forward to welcoming them to the McCain family,” said CEO Koeune.

“After more than a decade of building a successful business partnership, we are thrilled to officially become part of the McCain Foods family,” said Jos Koster and Wilco Boone, co-founders of Scelta Products. “Our companies have grown together over the years, and I’m excited to see that continue. In joining forces with McCain, a global leader in prepared appetizer products with similar business values to ours, I am confident that the legacy of Scelta Products’ will continue to be built upon.”
