Vancouver, BC, Canada-headquartered Planet Based Foods has entered into definitive  agreements with the Quality Food Centers (QFC) in the US states of Washington and Oregon, and Fred Meyer retail stores throughout Washington, Oregon and Idaho to list SKUs from its expanding range of frozen offerings as well as plant-based meat ingredients.

Through its wholly-owned subsidiary in San Diego, California, Planet Based Foods promotes itself as is the first company in the United States to scale up production of plant-based faux meat with sustainable hemp seed as its main ingredient. In addition to vegan protein-based Taquitos, its frozen line includes Original Hemp Burger and Green Chili Southwest Burger products.

The announcement on January 17 is in line with a partnership established last November with Cincinnati, Ohio-headquartered Kroger, a mainstream grocery distributor Kroger. Both QFC and Fred Meyer have been subsidiaries of Kroger since their respective mergers in 1998.

“The customer is always right, and they’re demanding more health-conscious food alternatives. We’re excited to grow our regional distribution in the Pacific Northwest and partner with these exemplary supermarket retailers to showcase our products,” said Planet Based Foods CEO Braelyn Davis. “As for what’s most important for us right now, it would have to be keeping up with the demand for our products, and sustaining our notable growth trajectory.”

About the Retailers

Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, QFC is a supermarket chain with 62 stores in the Puget Sound region of the state and in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area. Founded in 1955, and known as Lake Hills Thriftway until 1963, the retailer has recently begun offering more health-conscious foods.

Founded in 1922 in Portland, Oregon, the Fred Meyer chain of supermarkets has retained its original name for more than a century. As one of the first food retailers in the United States to offer one-stop shopping, it today operates from 130 locations, including Alaska.
