Beaver Street Fisheries of Jacksonville, Florida is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of Great Value Raw Shrimp. Distributed frozen in plastic bags, the EZ-Peel & Deveined Tail-On 21-25 count per pound packs are subject to this precautionary measure per the recommended action stated in an FDA advisory statement dated August 19, 2025 regarding Cesium-137 (Cs-137), a man-made radioisotope of cesium.

The primary health effect of concern following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (e.g., through consumption of contaminated food or water over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells of the human body.

The Great Value Raw Shrimp in question was distributed in the US states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia and available for consumer purchase in select Walmart retail stores in those states from July 28 to August 7 of this year.

As noted in the FDA statement: “At this time, no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 has entered the US. commerce. FDA is working with distributors and retailers that received product from PT Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Food) after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by Customs & Border Protection (CBP), but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137, to recommend that firms conduct a recall. In conjunction with other information, FDA determined that product from PT Bahari Makmur Sejati violates the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act in that it appears to have been prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern.”

The universal product lot codes (UPC) and “best by” dates of products affected are as follows:

• UPC 078742133898, Lot Code 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

• UPC 078742133898, Lot Code 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

• UPC 078742133898, Lot Code 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027.

Meanwhile, Southwind Foods of Carson, California, is also voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of frozen shrimp supplied by BMS Food, due to possible radionuclide (Cesium-137) contamination. Brands under the recall include Sand Bar, Arctic Shores, Best Yet, Great American, and First Street.

The bagged shrimp was distributed between July 17 and August 8 to retailers, distributors and wholesalers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania Utah, Virginia and Washington state.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled BMS frozen shrimp sourced from Indonesia should not consume the product. It should be disposed of or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
