“Real premium ice cream isn’t a new idea for us,” said Taylor Janisse, a product developer at the Holland, Michigan-based family owned and operated company. “For 100 years, we’ve focused on using real, locally sourced milk and cream, quality ingredients and no shortcuts. What’s changing is that consumers are asking more questions about what goes into their food. We’ve been answering that question with the ice cream we make every day, and we are continuing to explore ways to evolve our classic recipes to meet the needs of what people want when they are choosing ice cream.”

Consumers are increasingly looking at labels, with nearly half (47%) of Americans claiming they always or often are checking nutrition details and ingredients while shopping (according to the International Food Information Council’s June 2026 Spotlight Survey. In the freezer aisle, this means they are noticing a simple truth: Not everything in the ice cream aisle is actually ice cream.

To meet the legal definition of real ice cream set by the US Food and Drug Administration, ice cream must contain at least 10% milkfat and weigh at least 4.5 pounds per gallon, among other requirements. Hudsonville’s Super Premium Pints go a step further, with 13% to 15% milkfat for an even richer, creamier texture.
