Listeria Risk Prompts Frozen Edamame Recall at Trader Joe’s

Las Vegas, Nevada-based Tesoros Trading Co. has recalled Trader Joe’s brand frozen lightly salted edamame out of concern that some of the fully cooked imported soybeans distributed at stores in Arizona, Southern California, Southern Nevada and Utah may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can result in miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The edamame subject to recall come in 16-ounce plastic bags that are stamped on the back bottom portion of the packs with the following codes: 22LA 102 M, 22LA 102 N or 22LA 102 P.

The affected SKU #51063 lots have been removed from distribution and destroyed, as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.

Trader Joe’s has urged shoppers who have purchased packs with the affected codes to not to eat the contents. The product should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
