Build they must! After recently breaking ground to expand in Indiana, United States Cold Storage (USCS) this week announced that a new 6.7-million-cubic-foot public refrigerated warehouse in McDonough, Georgia, is scheduled to be built by this autumn. The location is southeast of Atlanta, right off the busy Interstate 75 corridor.

Uscs LogoUSCS already has an 8.6-million-cubic-foot facility in McDonough, which it began leasing in 2016. This operation, known as McDonough 1, serves the greater Atlanta metropolitan market and provides regional multi-temperature distribution services to clients in the southeastern United States.

Situated just one mile away, the new “McDonough 2” site will offer 26,154 pallet positions, handle a wide range of refrigerated and frozen products (from -20° to +40°F) and provide distribution services from as many as 25 refrigerated, enclosed dock doors and five railcar doors (served by Norfolk Southern).

“Market interest in our first facility in McDonough was incredible,” said David Butterfield, the company’s vice president in the Midwest Region. “Our capacity was quickly filled and the demand continues.”

United States Cold Storage is making a capital investment of $40 million at the new site, where 80 jobs are being created. Meanwhile, company officials project even more growth down the road.

USCS McDonough 2 sits on a 43.3-acre parcel of land that was purchased in 2014. The land has available space for a Phase Two expansion, which would accommodate plans for an automated warehouse.

Headquartered in Voorhees, New Jersey, United States Cold Storage maintains more than 278 million cubic feet of temperature-controlled warehouse and distribution space at 38 facilities in 13 states spanning the USA from California to Pennsylvania. The John Swire & Sons subsidiary company ranks as the third largest public refrigerated warehouse operator in North America.
