In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day in the United States. That third Sunday is fast approaching, and the Lidl discount grocery store chain in the US is celebrating with a sweepstakes that will culminate with three creative foodies winning a year’s worth of ice cream.

To participate in the sweepstakes, entrants must share their favorite Lidl Gelatelli product on Twitter between July 12-17 using the hashtag #HowDoYouGelatelli, and tagging @LidlUS.  Winners will be chosen at random and announced on July 18.

Lidl’s Gelatelli range of frozen treats has quickly become a customer favorite, according to the retailer, which is part of the Neckarsulm, Germany-headquartered company that has more than 11,000 stores in 32 countries and employs over 310,000 people worldwide. Its Arlington, Virginia, USA-headquartered branch operates more than 100 outlets in nine East Coast states.

Ice Cream is big business in the United States, contributing more than $11 billion directly to the national economy and supporting more than 26,000 direct jobs that generate $1.6 billion in direct wages, according to the Washington, DC-based International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA). In 2017, about 1.4 billion gallons of ice cream and related frozen desserts were produced in the country.

Lidl’s wide line of gelatos, sorbets and other frozen sweet treats, many of which include Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade-Sourced Cocoa, are available for less than $5 across the retailer’s US store network.
