Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA-based Mikey’s, a producer of frozen gluten- and dairy-free food products, has introduced vegetable-based tortillas made from nutritious superfood ingredients such as spirulina, turmeric and hemp protein.

Three varieties – all grain-free, soy-free and non-GMO Project Verified as well as gluten-free – comprise the initial launch: Sweets & Beets Tortillas, made with purple sweet potato and beets; Golden Turmeric Tortillas, featuring turmeric and hemp protein; and Super Greens Tortillas, made with spinach, broccoli and spirulina.

According to a press release issued by the company, the tortillas “are perfect for today’s consumers looking to incorporate more vegetables, antioxidants and immunity-boosting ingredients into their diet while still enjoying favorite foods. They are amazing as a base for recipes, for wraps and or whatever your creativity allows.”

Mikey’s was founded in 2014 when Michael Tierney, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and former chef at several highly regarded restaurants, noticed a growing number of companies using the claim “gluten-free” as a way to convince consumers that their products were better for them, when, in reality, they were loaded with artificial ingredients, fillers and preservatives. Not able to find suitable clean ingredient options, he decided to make his own.

Tierney’s first product was an English muffin made out of just eight ingredients found in his home pantry. He began selling them locally at Long Island delis and markets while continuing to expand his line into pizza crust, tortillas and sliced bread. Within a year the brand was rolled out nationally at Whole Foods and Walmart stores.

“The initial idea was to provide gluten-free minded consumers products that do not require any compromise made with a few simple, high quality ingredients that deliver dense nutrition and great taste,” said Tierney. “Mikey’s ingredients are an important part of who we are and what we stand for. We believe that no one, regardless of allergies or dietary restrictions, should be forced to compromise on nutrition or taste.”

Mikey’s Tortillas are sold in packs of eight offered at a suggested retail price of $4.99. Currently they can be found exclusively at Sprouts Farmers Market and online at www.Eatmikeys.com.

In addition to tortillas, the company offers a wide range of allergen-friendly frozen foods that include breakfast pockets, Buffalo-style chicken pockets, pizza pockets, pizza crust, muffins and muffin tops at more 7,000 retail outlets, including natural food stores and supermarket chains across the United States.
